The US mission to the UN said Wednesday that Ambassador Michael Waltz convened a high-level meeting of the 10 elected members of the UN Security Council to discuss a forthcoming UN Security Council resolution on Gaza.
The US also welcomed Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates to the meeting, the mission said in a statement.
According to the mission, their participation reflected “regional support for the resolution” and underscored a shared interest in advancing stability and peace in Gaza.
However the Gulf states have sent mixed messages around their position on the resolution.
Turkey’s MIT intelligence agency chief met Hamas’ negotiating team head Khalil Al-Hayya on Wednesday and they discussed the path to be followed in implementing the next phases of the Gaza ceasefire plan, Turkish security sources said.
They said MIT chief Ibrahim Kalin met the Hamas delegation in Istanbul and they also discussed steps to ensure smooth operation of the ceasefire process and how to overcome existing problems.
The meeting discussed the latest political developments and the ongoing Israeli violations of the Gaza ceasefire agreement — including continued bombing and gunfire in areas controlled by the occupation forces, the closure of border crossings such as Rafah, and the obstruction of humanitarian and medical aid, as well as supplies needed for rebuilding infrastructure such as sewage, roads, and electricity networks.
Hayya thanked Turkiye for its role in reaching the ceasefire agreement, emphasizing the importance of Ankara’s continued support for the Palestinian people in confronting the occupation across all parts of occupied Palestine, especially Gaza.
He also briefed the Turkish minister on the recent meetings of Palestinian factions in Cairo, which reaffirmed the need to continue implementing the ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of occupation forces from the Gaza Strip, the reopening of all crossings, the launch of an early recovery phase, the start of comprehensive reconstruction, and the handover of Gaza’s administration to an independent Palestinian committee.
Hayya stressed the need for mediators and all relevant international bodies to pressure Israel to stop its horrific violations against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.”
The US draft resolution welcomes the establishment of a Board of Peace and authorizes the creation of an International Stabilization Force, both key components of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan, it said.
The plan calls for continued humanitarian aid delivery, the release of all hostages, and the groundwork for long-term security and prosperity in the region.
“Under President Trump’s bold leadership, the United States will again deliver results at the UN – not endless talk. The parties have seized this historic opportunity to finally end decades of bloodshed and make the president’s vision of lasting peace in the Middle East a reality,” the mission said.
Earlier, local media reported that the US has circulated a draft resolution to members of the Council calling for the creation of an international security force in Gaza with a mandate lasting at least two years.
It was not immediately clear when the US would bring the draft resolution to a vote in the 15-member Council. Adoption would require at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from any of the five permanent members — the US, Britain, France, Russia or China.
